Apple iPhone trade-in program now open, report claims

It's that time of year again when the market second hand iPhone explodes in anticipation of new handset setting alight the world.

This year, Apple is attempting to facilitate this transition to iPhone fans desperate to get their hands on the latest pattern, allowing owners of the previous generation devices to earn Apple Store Gift cards by dropping their old laptop.

According to a TechCrunch report, the program is being rolled out to some Apple Store locations around the United States, before a full launch in September.

Those packing an iPhone 4S or an iPhone 4 can earn up to $ 200 (about £128) if the device is in tip-top condition, while those dinged devices can only net $ 120 (about £77).

Apple will then refurbish and resell them phones in emerging markets, according to the report. Rather clever ploy, huh?

The seller, on the other hand, has a decent chunk of change to put towards an iPhone 5S contract or whatever they desire.

It is also thought that the program was established to increase the amount of people who buy their iPhones in the Apple Store. Analysts say that only 20 percent of iPhone sales are held in stores, with most customers online or grab them courtesy of their mobile provider.

This would get more people into those glitzy showrooms across the pond, but there is still no news on whether Apple has plans to bring the scheme for UK iPhone enthusiasts.

We may have to put up with Amazon and eBay for now, although this position may be more fruitful in many cases.
