The iPhone 5S release date is now just days away as Apple confirms its next-generation flagship phone will be formally unveiled on September 10.

With a raft of iPhone 5S rumours having done the rounds in recent week and the phone making a number of premature appearances, invites to a September 10 unveiling have now revealed the iPhone 5S really is on its way. What's more, it is expected that the 5S will be unveiled alongside an all new, budget iPhone 5C.

Here's all you need to know about the iPhone 5S ahead of the phone's official unveiling.

After months of speculation, Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 5S will be launched on 10 September, next Tuesday. While official invites have confirmed the phone will make an appearance at the company's Cupertino HQ in California, Apple's next flagship phone will reportedly hit retailers just days later. An iPhone 5S release date has been teased as September 20, 10 days after its unveiling.

The news was originally broken by iMore, before being backed-up by the usually-reliable 9to5Mac and TechCrunch. 9to5Mac spoke to a source who has apparently used the device, suggesting it may be someone within Apple.

Apple’s mobile devices are usually available to buy within two weeks of their launches. Our bet is that the iPhone 5S will be available on Friday 20 September. This will make it the exact mirror of the iPhone 5’s launch – which went on sale on Friday 21 September 2013.

The most-leaked new feature of recent weeks is a new gold finish. This is the first time we’ve seen a genuinely new shade of iPhone since the first white model – the white iPhone 4 back in 2011.

If you’re imagining gaudy bling, rest assured that it’ll probably look pretty good in the flesh. Leaked photos suggest the gold iPhone 5S will have a light ‘champagne’ finish rather than a vivid gold colour.

Don’t like it? There are no signs of Apple dropping the black and white finishes currently available. It’s also rumoured that the gold iPhone 5S will only come in a ‘premium’ 128GB edition, which seems a shame as it’ll probably cost upwards of £700.
Earlier this year, it was rumoured that the iPhone 5S will feature a fingerprint scanner as a method of identification. Although initially dismissed by many as an unlikely addition, unearthed iOS 7 code suggests it might actually exist.

The fingerprint reader – if real – will be built into the home button, letting it slide into the phone without forcing any drastic changes in the phone’s design. 

The code suggests the iPhone 5S will ask you to scan your right thumb during the setup process, which will them be used to identify you – presumably cutting down the passwords and such you’ll have to enter.

It could also be used to load discrete user profiles, which would be particularly useful for iPhones that’ll be used by kids as well as adults. Nice idea, Apple. If it works, that is.

History suggests the iPhone 5S will have roughly the same design as the iPhone 5. The iPhone 3GS looked a lot like the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4S was the dead spit of the iPhone 4. Isn’t it a bit soon for a full iPhone redesign?

Some sources do not agree. Commmercial Times suggests the iPhone 5S will have a 4.3-inch screen – 0.3 inches up from the iPhone 5. However, there are plenty of conflicting rumours that suggest Apple will stick with the 4-inch form.

For example, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that the iPhone 5S’s design will be near-identical to the current model.

Apple will give the iPhone 5S a proper camera refresh this year, having barely updated the camera in the iPhone 5.

The phone is expected to feature a 12-megapixel camera, suggesting it’ll have a different sensor from the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Sony Xperia Z, both of which use a 13-megapixel Sony sensor. That’s four megapixels greater than the 8-megapixel sensors used in both the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

Just as important, the iPhone 5S will also have an improved lens and a more powerful flash. KGI Securities writes that the phone will have an f/2.0 lens, significantly faster than the f/2.4 lens used in the current model. The flash will also be bumped up from the single-LED type to dual-LED. This should help give the flash more even coverage, which is crucial when taking low-light shots with a flash.

However, come release day the most noticeable change for most people will be the shift from iOS 6 to iOS 7 and its new camera app. iOS 7’s camera interface offers far more features than the stripped-back app of iOS 6.

New additions include active filters for Instagram-style effects. You can also take square photos – perfect for Facebook profile portraits.     

The iPhone 5 has a dual-core 1.3GHz processor. Next to the quad-core Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One that doesn’t sound too powerful.

Apple is taking a different approach to its Android rivals, though. The iPhone 5S will move from a 32-bit ARMv7 architecture to 64-bit ARMv8 architecture – it’s Apple’s main move in the upgrade from an Apple A6 chip (as seen in the iPhone 5) to the Apple A7 type, used here.

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that it’ll be 20 per cent more efficient than the current Apple A6 chipset. However, there have been relatively few suggestions that the iPhone 5S will actually move to a quad-core chipset. Where we might have expected a consensus on quad-core chip, many suggest the iPhone 5S will have a dual-core CPU. The jury is out.

Most agree that the GPU will get an upgrade from a tri-core PowerVR model to a quad-core one, though.

Apple is not going to radically alter the screen size and screen resolution of the iPhone series in the iPhone 5S. The phone will have a 4-inch 1,136 x 640 pixel display, just like the current iPhone.

However, Apple is expected to change the type of screen it uses. Rather than a standard IPS screen, the iPhone 5 will use an IGZO display, a screen type made by Sharp.

IGZO is designed to be more power-efficient than IPS, while retaining great image quality and the good viewing angles expected of an iPhone. The screen array is also thinner than IPS.

One of the big questions is - will there be a 128GB iPhone? The only Apple mobile device to get a 128GB edition so far is the full-size iPad.

Of course, in a larger device like that, there's much less of a technological challenge. To get a NAND array small enough to fit into the (doubtless) super-slim iPhone 5S will require much greater miniaturisation.

Sandisk told us earlier this year that it was working on its own tech to make 128GB phones possible. But will it be ready for September?

Some believe so, having suggested Apple will release a 'premium' gold edition of the phone with 128GB storage.

Leaked photos that show what appears to be the iPhone 5S with its rear casing removed, revealing a 5.92Whr unit. This is just a little more powerful than the 5.45Whr battery of the iPhone 5, but if coupled with the power saving features of an IGZO screen then battery life could be substantially improved.

It’s a spec that supports the idea that the iPhone 5S will have the same screen size as the current model.

Early Impressions
The iPhone 5S is likely to be an important, but hardly earth-shattering upgrade to the iPhone 5. Improvements to most elements, including camera and CPU are likely.

EE: 4 g is coming at all price points

EE has predicted that 4 g services will not remain a high-end luxury for a long time, with the introduction of cheaper 4 g phones, making high-speed service available to the masses.

Currently confined largely to the premium flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC and BlackBerry Q10, soon 4 g connectivity options will filter down price points, the network has planned, with mid-range and budget phones all set to get in on the Act.

"The important thing here is that it produces is about to begin to access most of the key points with 4 g price," said Marc Allera, head of sales at EE while talking exclusively with TrustedReviews. "All the major suppliers are very focused on 4 g which is great for us."

He added: "not only is going to be a high-end gaming, there are mid-range and even some low end 4 g devices that we are beginning to see on the roadmap, now that both will launch in Q4 this year, so in the coming months, or certainly during the next year."

Looking to the future, Allera said: "there will be a really good spread of devices with different specifications and at different prices that means 4 g soon will cover most of the points of the price and specs that 3 g is today".

While EE has offered 4 g in the United Kingdom for almost a year, the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile saw its first competition entering the fray g in recent days as both O2 and Vodafone 4 g 4 g networks were launched.

Not threatened by competition, Allera argued that the EE is focused solely on its network and services and has predicted that, although 4 g contracts are more expensive than the 3 g rates will soon filter down to all areas of the market.

"4 g is a premium service and then people are paying a little more for a faster and better service and devices that are currently available for it, high-end devices, major only," Allera said.

He added: "As the devices become more accessible, which means that the price points become more accessible to consumers, that is going to be the tipping point where 4 g becomes the norm and people will be willing to pay a little extra for an internet experience much faster, better."

LG G2 pre-order price in Germany drops to 500

• Original G2 price use info of LG 600 in Europe, but the phone just surfaced in Germany at MediaMarkt 500 (this is for the 16GB-Version). The 32 is not available in this business, but the initial price difference was 30 (600 16 GB, 630 32 GB, so it should be 530).

Both black and white the flagship G2 are available for pre-order and shipping is scheduled on June 30, as well as the rest of Europe to start.

The LG-G2 is in a few other shops in Germany at the original price of 600 available, but they will be there probably soon. We tried also MediaMarkt stores abroad, but the G2 not in each of them available. Note that the G2 on pre-order in the United Kingdom for 468 (550).

The budget iPhone is likely to launch as a mid-range, plastic-bodied alternative to the upcoming iPhone 5S. If the rumours are true, its launch date could be rapidly approaching.

Although Apple’s Senior Vice President, Phillip Schiller, rebuffed claims of a cheaper iPhone model, it hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from generating a lot of gossip about a budget iPhone launch, complete with pictures of the plastic body.

“Despite the popularity of cheap smartphones, this will never be the future of Apple’s products,” said Schiller. “Every product that Apple creates, we consider using only the best technology available.”

Although not denying the possibility of a budget iPhone, Apple's former Senior Vice President of the iPod division, Tony Fadell, suggested that creating such a device would be hard for Apple to do.

"It's really hard for Apple to make anything low cost, so it's going to be really hard for them to produce a low cost iPhone," he said to TrustedReviews.

“I think they should [make a low cost iPhone],” he added. “We made really low cost iPods so I think there is a way to make a low cost iPhone.”

To whet your appetite pre-launch, we’ve rounded up everything we know so far about the heavily rumoured budget iPhone, including the first pricing tips.

The latest rumour suggests the budget iPhone could be with us on September 18, touching down with the iPhone 5S. According to the source cited by CurrentEditorials, the mid-range smartphone will be a refresh of the existing iPhone to complement the iPhone 5S, but with a new plastic case and a reduced price tag.

Previously tipped to make an appearance in September, the leak was the first to give a specific launch date for the budget iPhone. The rumour also suggested that the launch would be coupled with a September 27 release date.

These launch and release dates sit well with previous iPhone release dates, in that the iPhone 5 was launched on September 12 2012 and then released to the public on September 21 just over a week later.

The budget iPhone will target the mid-range market currently dominated by Android smartphones, attempting to broaden Apple’s user base. It will do this by using a plastic case rather than the aluminium of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.

Taking design cues from the 5th generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS, the body of the budget iPhone is said to be a little wider and thicker than the iPhone 5 due to its curvy plastic body.

According to a hands-on video posted on YouTube where the budget iPhone is compared to the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch, the cheaper model has a unibody plastic casing that is made from polycarbonate.

The volume buttons, mute slider, SIM tray and hold buttons will apparently all be made from the same plastic material to keep a cohesive design and reduce costs.

From the leaked rear cases for the budget iPhone it is evident that the cheaper model will have the new lightning connector and a headphone jack on the bottom of the device. It will also have similar speaker grills to the iPod touch 5th generation and the iPhone 5.  

The plastic body will reportedly be available in six to eight colours, with five of those already popping up in leaked images – white, yellow, red, green and blue.

Potentially launching as one of the first devices running the new iOS 7 due this autumn, the latest budget iPhone rumours suggest that the device will be a reinvented iPhone 5.

“Instead of adding another iPhone to its line-up, Apple has decided to refresh the soon-to-be mid-range iPhone 5 with a selection of colours and a reduced build cost, thanks to some well-placed plastic,” said the source.

This means the budget iPhone could have the same 4-inch 1136 x 640p resolution screen with a 326ppi image density. This could be powered by an Apple A6 processor with the option of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB internal storage options. However, Apple has a history of restricting storage options in its lower-end phones.

On the rear there’s an 8-megapixel camera coupled with a 1.2-megapixel front-facing FaceTime camera.

However, originally the budget iPhone was rumoured to pack a bit of a spec downgrade to reflect the mid-range price, with one source even suggesting that the device could launch in two different price bands due to slightly varying innards.

Rumoured to be codenamed Zenvo and Zagato/Bertone, the two budget iPhone models may well have different processors to mark their differing price tags.

Zenvo is reportedly the cheaper of the two with a Samsung-made H5P dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM, 4G LTE and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

The dearer model, Zagato or Bertone, will have another Samsung-made processing chip, the H6P with the same 1GB of RAM and connectivity options.

The latest rumour is that the iPhone 5C may not include certain software features like Siri when it launches.

According to Gene Munster analyst Piper Jaffray, Apple may decide to restrict the software features on the iPhone 5C to stop the budget offering stealing sales from the iPhone 5S flagship.

“In terms of the phone itself, we expect the cheaper phone to have a plastic casing, 4-inch display, and lower end internal specs (processor, camera, memory, etc.) than the 5S/5 line up,” wrote Jaffray in a note to investors. “Additionally, we believe that Apple may exclude some software features, such as Siri, which we note was not an option on the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 upon launch.”

It would be rather strange for Apple to take Siri out of the iPhone 5C, seeing as the Cupertino company has increasingly put focus on the increased voice functionality of Siri in the new iOS 7.

Although widely expected to launch as a cheaper alternative to the iPhone 5S, there hasn’t been much news as to how much the budget iPhone will actually cost.

However, that changed recently when a prominent commenter on Chinese social media site Weibo said the iPhone 5C would be priced at 3000 yuan SIM-free. This would mean the budget iPhone would launch with a UK price tag of around £320.

This was further supported by KGI analyst and notorious Apple tipster Mingchi Kuo, who said:

"We've learned that the iPhone 5 line will be terminated from 4Q13, while the iPhone 4S line will carry on. From this, we infer that iPhone 5C is launched to replace iPhone 4. In order words, the 5C model will be positioned as midrange. We forecast its retail price to be US$400-500."

If you look at the prices of other recently released mid-range handsets from rival manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, this £320 price tag for the iPhone 5C fits well. The HTC One Mini is £380, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini is £350 and the Nokia Lumia 820 is £320 in comparison.

Of course, we don’t actually expect Apple to call their cheaper device the budget iPhone, but with no official name to go by as yet, this will have to do for now.

Other names that have been bandied about include the iPhone mini, following the naming scheme adopted by the 7.9-inch iPad mini, or the iPhone Lite.

In July, a picture of budget iPhone boxes emerged online, revealing the name iPhone 5C in a rather convincing Apple font.

Similar to the S added to the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 and potentially the iPhone 5 as well, standing for “speed”, the iPhone 5C may represent the word colour, seeing as the smartphone is tipped to launch in a variety of colour options like the newest iPod Touch.

It may also relate to the mid-range pricepoint for the iPhone 5, with the C perhaps standing for “cost” or “cheap”. However, we highly doubt that Apple would want the word cheap associated with any of their products.

A huge number of budget iPhone pictures have leaked online, although so far all we’ve seen is the back panel of the device complete with the component chassis.

Although unconfirmed at present, already anticipated Samsung Galaxy S5 is an inevitability of current trend of annual cycles of product and company must always be insatiable pushing the envelope and raking in cash.

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 now a couple of months, attention has already turned his successor, with Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors starting to make the rounds.

According to "anonymous sources close to the creator of South Korean phone," recent reports have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be used to launch a new Design standard 3.0 ' within the company.

The sources he declared: "we don't have the slightest idea of what design, while 3.0 really means in terms of looks, we can now confirm that Samsung will start to use aluminium for its high-end smartphones and S5 Samsung Galaxy will be the first to receive this treatment."

Further hinting at a change in design and materials, Samsung has recently acquired carbon fiber specialist of SGL group, announcing in an official statement that it would be using the lightweight materials in future high-end phones and tablet.

"Lightweight materials have become an important factor, not only in industrial applications, but also consumer end markets such as digital media," said Yoosung Chung, President and CEO of Samsung petrochemical &. He added: "this partnership will be positioned in the Samsung as a leading company in the development and implementation of products based on carbon fibre".

"The cooperation should provide a stable long-term supply of carbon fiber materials for Samsung and promote the use of various Samsung products and consumer electronics applications, medical devices and engineering applications"

With the Samsung Galaxy S4 having taken specific smartphone to the next level, it is widely expected that the South Korean manufacturer will continue with a similar trend with the next-generation S5. Although few areas the list of phone features have yet to be rumored, some elements have been around.

Earlier this month a leaked Samsung patent (above), showing off a new angled cut phone that has been questioned for being the next Samsung Galaxy S5.

By design store outed, the phone will run a version of Google's Android operating system (no surprise there then) as well as integrated cameras front and back. Currently no further specifications S5 are leaked.

Although the price of Samsung Galaxy S5 is far from being confirmed, it has already been suggested that S5 will cost more than its predecessor already pricy.

According to the same unnamed sources who claimed a metal-bodied drawing will be given the next-generation portable, the price of Samsung Galaxy S5 will be bumped up from the new premium, construction materials.
