Ubuntu Edge does not reach the target of $ 32 m crowdfunding, still breaks record

Ubuntu's border failed to reach its goal of $ 32 million, Indiegogo crowdfunding but still broke the record for the amount by which it generated.

Managing to collect .906 $12,809 (£8,22 million) to the edge of Ubuntu, London-based Canonical developers managed to break all records of crowdfunding.

The previous record was held by InPulse of gravel on Kickstarter, but the funds collected for the border of Ubuntu has exceeded these figures of more than $ 10 million (£ 6.4 million).

The funds came from 27,488 supporters on IndieGogo, support the Canonical for Ubuntu to make 40,000 RAND smartphone with the Ubuntu operating system.

"We raised .906 $12,809, making the edge of the world largest ever fixed crowdfunding campaign. Let's not lose sight that this result is, "said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical. "Nearly 20,000 people believed in our vision enough to help hundreds of dollars for a phone months in advance, just to help make it happen. It was only individuals are: Bloomberg LP has given $ 80,000 and several small businesses have contributed to $ 7,000. Thank you all for getting behind us. "

The edge of Ubuntu would come with a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 inches 4.5 p, running Ubuntu mobile OS, but also dual-boot Android. It could also turn into a full-fledged desktop PC running Ubuntu Desktop.

"While we wanted to build the edge of Ubuntu showcase on phones with passion, the support and the attention it has received still will be a huge Boost as more phones begin to arrive in 2014 of Ubuntu".

Also packing dual-access LTE chip for the US and UK markets, the edge of Ubuntu would have 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory.

"Thousands of you clearly want to have a phone of Ubuntu and believe in our vision of convergence, and I assure you won't have much longer to wait.

Most Edge of Ubuntu funds are generated when Indiegogo phone campaign was launched. 5,044 customers opted to run the Ubuntu for the first day only price of $ 600 (£385), while hundreds more fell for your smartphone for $ 695 (£446) introduced later.

Edge of Ubuntu: 5 reasons that the campaign was a great success

Opinion:At the beginning it was clear that the Board would not hit its Unbuntu ambitious $ 32 million funding target crowd funding. After the initial peak of commitments the trend showed that would fall short. But that doesn't mean it was a failure. Actually there are many reasons why the Ubuntu campaign should be celebrated.

This is obvious. While the Board lost its ambitious target Ubuntu, still raised $12,8 million and broke the record of commitments in crowd funding process. That is a massive support not only the same phone book of Ubuntu, but trust that people have in Ubuntu.

Most important was the contribution of $ 80,000 from Bloomberg, a huge and very influential. Without the campaign would be all too easy to dismiss the concept of Ubuntu Edge: cannot reject it now.

Or, to put it another way, it shows Ubuntu is a true leader and innovator when it comes to mobile computing technology. While Ubuntu offers an ambitious concept and pushing to the limit, such as Apple, Samsung and Google are busy squeezing more money out of their flagship brands: Apple with the next budget iPhone 5 C; Samsung with endless variations of the Galaxy S4; Google with the mainstream, mass-market products like the Nexus and Nexus 7 4, albeit with a small hat tip towards Google Glass.

I not mistaken: there is nothing wrong with providing good quality, mainstream products. But nobody can say with a straight face that adding a higher resolution screen, or eye-tracking ' technology ', is innovation. The big brands are ideas, but Ubuntu is not.

This article is proof enough that the edge of Ubuntu did wonders for the profile of Ubuntu. I write a lot about Ubuntu as a general rule, yet here I am discussing the merits. And some very unscientific research shows that's the edge of Ubuntu Ubuntu gave an unprecedented level of exposure.

A search for ' Edge ' on Google Ubuntu View 28 million results with phone coverage from all the world's largest media. Any person of good PR will tell you that widespread coverage in mainstream press helps make the niche brands soar, and it's still true even in the age of Twitter, Reddit and Facebook (not Google Plus, don't be silly).

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu parent company Canonical Ltd., was alluding to this point in his last updated:

"All the support and advertising continued to guide our discussions with some major manufacturers, and we have many mobile networks in the world already signed for the carrier's Advisory Group of Ubuntu. They were watching this global discussion of Ubuntu and the need for innovation very tightly. Watch this space! "

Obviously it's in his interest to talk about this point, but definitely nothing opens the door better than $ 12 millions of genuine support and advertising worldwide? I find it hard to believe that there is a telephony manufacturer out there that is interested in being associated with making the ' smartphone ' first Ubuntu similarly Asus became so closely connected as the company behind the hugely successful Nexus 7 and its follow-up, the Nexus 7 2.

Momentum is important, just ask Microsoft. At the time that the brand or the product starts to melt into the public consciousness, the easier it is for people to write it as an also-ran.

This is not to say Ubuntu is now a major player: it isn't. But with computation becoming more mobile, not to have an opinion and a presence in that space would make Ubuntu look irrelevant and tired. Now the opposite is true. Ubuntu has a vision for mobile and (within reason) knows.

Ubuntu edge campaign fails to meet its $32-million target

AppId is over the quota

The ambitious Ubuntu edge smartphone project has met its untimely demise, at least as far as the Indiegogo campaign is concerned.

Back in July, canonical started a campaign to raise $32 million in 30 days for the Ubuntu edge smartphone, a device with the child of specifications that dreams are made of. The crowd-funded campaign had a strong start, amassing over $2 million in the first eight hours and going on to hit a record amount of over $10 million, the highest for a crowd-funded campaign, beating the likes of the Pebble watch (which is to actual product at this point).

But it what parameter even then that the campaign which never going to make it. The days were few, and what the final amount too high and even though canonical managed to raise on the impressive amount of money they were never going to reach the target with the ever dwindling interest.

Thus, as of today, the campaign has finally ended, with the company managing to raise $12.8 million, a far cry from the $32-million goal. But while the campaign may have ended, the idea doesn't have to. Even though the campaign failed to reach its goal, it did create a fair amount of buzz about the device and the OS behind it founder of Ubuntu - Mark Shuttleworth – has revealed that some large manufacturers have come out to discuss the device with him. So there might still be some hope for the Ubuntu edge after all.
